The Network Engineer I is an entry-level technical role within the LAN Engineering team, responsible for supporting the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of enterprise local area network (LAN) infrastructure. This role focuses on foundational network engineering tasks, troubleshooting, and adherence to established enterprise standards to ensure reliable and secure connectivity across clinical and business environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the installation, configuration, and maintenance of LAN infrastructure, including switches, access layers, and associated connectivity within IDF and MDF environments
- Perform basic troubleshooting of network issues, including connectivity problems, interface errors, VLAN misconfigurations, and port-level incidents
- Assist in implementing network changes, including adding or modifying access switches, VLAN assignments, and uplink connectivity
- Monitor network performance and escalate complex issues as needed to senior engineers
- Follow established enterprise network standards, naming conventions, and operational processes to ensure consistency and compliance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support site deployments, upgrades, and remediation efforts
- Document configurations, changes, and troubleshooting steps to support operational continuity and knowledge sharing
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts, including:
- Layer 2 switching (VLANs, trunking, spanning tree basics)
- Basic Layer 3 concepts (IP addressing, default gateways, routing fundamentals)
- Familiarity with enterprise networking hardware (e.g., Cisco, Meraki, or equivalent)
- Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a network operations environment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented standards and procedures
- Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team environment
Technical Expectations
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts, including:
- Layer 2 switching (VLANs, trunking, spanning tree basics)
- Basic Layer 3 concepts (IP addressing, default gateways, routing fundamentals)
- Familiarity with enterprise networking hardware (e.g., Cisco, Meraki, or equivalent)
- Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a network operations environment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented standards and procedures
- Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team environment
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1 year related experience
- Some experience in automation, specifically related to deployment, recovery, or other manual processes. Scripting with one of PowerShell, Perl, Ansible, VB Script, Python, SQL.
Preferred Experience/Certifications
- Associate-level certification (e.g., CCNA or equivalent)
- Exposure to enterprise LAN environments, including structured cabling and access layer deployments
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools and ticketing systems (e.g., ServiceNow)
- Exposure to using AI-assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, such as log analysis, troubleshooting support, or documentation generation
- Familiarity with AI-enabled operational workflows (e.g., change monitoring insights, automation planning, or data analysis)
- Basic understanding of responsible AI use in an enterprise environment, including security, privacy, and use of approved/sanctioned AI tools
- Interest in leveraging AI to enhance network operations, efficiency, and service quality
