This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global HR-tech space as a Managing Counsel, Product (Please note, this is not a People Manager role). We are looking for a talented and eager lawyer, who is interested in helping with our team’s mission, namely: to deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions for Remote’s products and stakeholders, while protecting Remote from unacceptable risk.
Remote’s well established Legal team is a bunch of friendly, talented highly motivated lawyers from a whole host of different countries, with some awesome experiences.
As Remote grows and adds new products, the volume and complexity of issues scale across 90+ jurisdictions. You will be a legal partner to Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security, with emphasis on HRIS and AI/ML features, translating complex rules into clear, shippable requirements and striking the right balance between compliance and commerciality.
More specifically, this role is expected to:
- Lead AI and HRIS product compliance, partnering with Product, Engineering, Security and the Privacy team;
- Embed a risk-based legal review into product development workflows;
- Own product T&Cs for HRIS and AI features (output ownership, training use, acceptable use, transparency/disclaimers).
- Stand up core Product AI governance (model inventory, risk classification, human oversight, bias/testing, incident response alignment)
What you bring
- Qualified Lawyer: Seasoned lawyer with extensive experience on Product counseling (jurisdiction agnostic; multiple bars a plus)
- Product Counsel Experience in technology, with prior HR-tech exposure (EOR/PEO/HRIS/Payroll) advising at scale across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong command of emerging AI frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, UK approach, U.S. state/federal developments, Canada AIDA) and their interplay with data protection (GDPR/CCPA) and employment transparency rules
- In-house Experience: Bonus - In-house legal experience preferred
- Startup Experience: Bonus - Experience in fast-paced start-up
- Tech Passion: Passionate about tech and HR tech products
- Skills: Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Language: Writes and speaks fluent English
- Tools: Tech-savvy with Slack, Juro, Notion, Google Drive, or equivalent
- It's not required to have experience working remotely, but considered a plus
Key Responsibilities
Legal Expertise
- Own HRIS and AI product counseling end-to-end, including AI impact assessments, model cards, and risk controls with Privacy/Security.
- Draft and negotiate product terms, and AI-specific clauses as required (training/usage of data & metadata, output/IP ownership, acceptable use, transparency), in collaboration with Commercial Legal team.
- Proactively monitor new AI and tech regulations and translate those into concrete, actionable steps for product, design and engineering teams.
- Manage external counsel on complex, multi-jurisdictional issues; drive clear, practical outcomes.
